Wikirank is a new tool that shows you what is popular on Wikipedia. The data is based on the Wikipedia servers which is available to the public. On the homepage of Wikirank you will see trending topics for the day, and the most read Wikipedia pages for the last 30 days.

For example, in the last 30 days, one of the most read pages was Natasha Richardson, the actress who recently passed away due to a ski injury. The Wikipedia page for Natasha Richardson was viewed 2,482,209 times in the last 30 days!

Also, when you are on the site, there is a search box where you can search for any name/topic to see how popular the pages are. I did a search for “Google” and saw the following:

This tool is beneficial in helping internet users keep with the current search trends. Wikipedia is one of the top visited websites and the pages rank very well organically (Google loves Wikipedia!). Many Wikipedia pages will rank in the top search results, even higher than the sites that have been working with Search Engine Optimization Professionals.

Twitter is becoming so popular that there is now a Twitter Directory organized with multiple categories to make it easy to find celebrities, musicians, online marketing professionals, etc to follow. On the homepage of this directory you will see the top 5 people in each category. The categories listed on the homepage are the categories that have the largest number of followers in each category. For example, when I wrote this post “Celebrity” was the top category, with Britney Spears being the most followed. Who would have thought!

So if you are an active Twitter user, check out WeFollow.com. If you would like to add yourself to the directory, all you have to do is reply to twitter.com/wefollow and list up to 3 categories you are interested in being listed under. For example, if Getupdated were to submit them self, they might suggest the following categories: @wefollow #seo #web #design

Google Signs up for Twitter

Nowadays, micro-blogging sites such as Twitter.com are taking over the web. Micro-blogging is when users send brief text updates which can either be viewed by anyone on the web or a restricted group. Many people use sites like Twitter to find out industry related news, update their friends on what they are doing, or for SEO purposes.

Evidence of how popular Twitter has become is when Google signed up for Twitter last week. (Matt Cutts has confirmed that this is a real Googler). You can follow Google on Twitter for news and updates from the search engine. Their Twitter page is similar to their Google Blog. If you are interested in following Google on Twitter, check out their page: twitter.com/google

Top 5 Benefits of Blogging

Many people wonder, why should I spend my time blogging, and are there really any true benefits of this technique? The answer to this question is a definite “Yes!” Below I have outlined the top 5 benefits of blogging, whether your business is big or small.

1. Fresh Content- The search engines love fresh content. Content is one of the main factors that helps the search engines determine the relevancy of your pages. Constantly adding content through your blog will ensure your website does not become stale.
2. Anchor Text- In your blog posts you can place anchor text that includes your keywords to link back to the specific pages you optimized. For example, if you are a car dealership and have a post on the BMW 3 Series, you can link the keywords back to the BMW page on your site. This will assist in your Search Engine Optimization efforts.
3. Position as an Expert- Blog posts are a great way to showcase your knowledge of your industry and increase your credibility.
4. Add a personal touch- Your blog posts can give you the opportunity to be more informal and discuss topics you wouldn’t necessarily want to publish on your main web pages.
5. Allow your site visitors to post comments- Your blog gives visitors the opportunity to comment on your posts. This is a great way to get people involved on your site and interact with others who post comments.

The Most Important, Most Overlooked Snippet of Web Copy

There’s one fabulous SEO technique that’s overlooked all the time. It’s one little thing that website owners can do to dramatically improve their site’s rankings. And it’s so easy, it takes just a few minutes to do. You don’t need special expertise, technical or otherwise. It isn’t a trick and it isn’t black hat SEO. And you’ll kick yourself when you realize you’ve missed this one simple and so-effective optimization necessity.

Your title tags. All of them, but especially your home page and your all-important product pages, need to be optimized with your top keyword phrase for that page. But it’s amazing how many times I’ve visited client sites where the title tag for every page reads simply: “The ABC Insurance Company” or even worse “Home Page”.

If you’re going to all the effort of researching keywords (or paying an SEO to research them), and applying those terms to your site content, then grab hold of this golden opportunity to increase your SEO impact at zero cost.

Let’s say your top 2 keyword phrases are “flood insurance” and “insurance protection program”. Your title tag could read “Flood Insurance Protection Program, The ABC Insurance Company”. Both search terms are there, they appear first in the tag, and the company name follows. All bases covered.

And remember… each page needs its own set of keyword phrases. Using the same search terms for every page of your site is a wasted opportunity because you’re missing out on dozens if not hundreds of other terms people might be using to find products/services just like yours. Whether they find you through your home page or through a sub page doesn’t matter… as long as they find you, are engaged by the content and enticed by the call to action included on every page.

In short, there’s a reason why the title tag is the very first thing that appears on every web page — it’s THAT important.

“Borrowing” Copy for My Website is OK… Right?

All too often people in the process of designing or updating their web pages struggle to come up with the right content. After delays and frustration, many seek other sites out on the internet for assistance. Perhaps ‘borrowing’ bits and pieces of web sites ranking well whether it is from competitors or even corporate websites that may feature services or products that you sell are considered harmless to use.

Many people do not realize what they may be doing (besides plagarizing) is setting yourself up for SEO disaster. Search engines will penalize for ‘duplicate’ content on a website, especially if this text is verbatim and was used directly from a website that may be doing very well in rankings. Penalizing by a search engine can range anywhere from low or very slow rankings to even banning a website altogether.

If hiring a professional copywriter is not in the budget, coming up with good website content is still achievable. You can get ideas from other websites (just don’t copy it!). Think about what your visitors need to know when they reach your page, as well as what you can offer them that is unique or better than your competition. Put yourself into your visitors seat and think of what you would want to see if you were searching for your products or services.

The bottom line is don’t plagerize web content. If you have already and are concerned you could have caused a problem with your rankings, have a professional review the website to determine what can be done to correct the situation.
